One night over a few beers a friend of mine sought to convince me that the Bible is the infallible word of God.
To that I replied…
Do you know how many times God commands the Hebrews to commit genocide in the Old Testament?
Would an all loving God do that?
“I don’t believe the Bible says that. Come on.
You’re making that up. Prove it.”
As I sat with the Bible in my hands I knew it was in there, but I’m no Biblical scholar. I didn’t know where to locate the verses I needed to back up my claim. But then I opened right up to this…
Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.
(1 Sammuel 15:2- 3)
I showed him what I just read so he could bare witness.
He was in denial.
I must be taking it out of context.
Let’s try again. Having very little confidence that i could quickly find another such verse I flipped and opened randomly to this…
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that has known man by lying with him. But all the woman children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. (Numbers 31:17- 18)
My friend’s eyes lit up.
I was shaking.
Try it again!
Once more, this time with my eyes closed, I flipped the pages and randomly opened up the Bible to this verse…
See the LORD is coming with fire, and his chariots are like a whirlwind; he will bring down his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgement on all people, and many will be those slain by the LORD.
(Isaiah 66:15-16)
Wow!
This time the LORD his Holy self is laying people to waste. At this point we were both awestruck. I remember having goosebumps. I had to look these passages up again to even cite them for this post.
Putting down the Bible I then pulled another book from the shelf. This book I was far less familiar with. Let’s see what the Bhagavad Gita has to say about all this…
Neither by studying The Vedas, nor by performing sacrifices, nor by charities, or ceremonial rites or penances or similar activities can I be seen in this form.
( Bhagavad Gita 11:48)
Thanks for Reading
